Oki Setiana Dewi

Actress & Producer

“Australians don’t just come from different cultures and religions, but even Australian Muslims themselves are incredibly diverse. This makes us feel like we are able to have a strong Islamic core, based on our faith, while still valuing diversity.”

About Oki Setiana Dewi

Spreading understanding about Islam to an audience of thousands of people each day is by no means an easy job. But with millions of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, prominent roles in films, soap operas and talk shows, as well as constantly being in the eye of the media, for 2017 MEP alumna Oki Setiana Dewi, talking about Islam has come to feel as natural as breathing.

Actress, producer, author, activist and academic Oki is well known for her award-winning role in the movie When Love Glorifies God, as well as her presence on religious television programs including Islam Itu Indah (Islam is Beautiful) which is screened live daily to a national audience of over 30 million people.

AIMEP highlights and achievements

Oki’s AIMEP experience was an empowering one, giving her a new perspective on the way she shares her understanding of Islam. She described her AIMEP experience in Australia as strengthening her understanding of the diversity of the global Muslim community, and how people are able to explain Islam in such a diverse context.

Inspired by her experience, especially the multicultural education offered at Al Siraat College in Victoria, Oki went on to focus her doctoral research on Multicultural Education based on the Qur’an.
