Yanuardi Syukur

“The young Muslim leaders of AIMEP can truly play an important role as ‘diplomats’ in maintaining and creating positive and meaningful relationships between our two nations.”

About Yanuardi Syukur

Yanuardi Syukur is one of those rare individuals who combines several vocations. Besides his work as a lecturer in Social Anthropology at Khairun University in Ternate, North Maluku, and his doctoral research at Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, he is also a prolific writer.

Having written over fifty books about Islam, Yanuardi is currently serving as Head of the National Islamic Writers Association, Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP) in South Sulawesi.

In 2013 Yanuardi received the national Pena Award for his non-fiction works, and the Lepkhair Award for his productivity as a writer. Among his books are Honesty Therapy and The Power of Forgiveness (written with M Nahar), and the biographies of former Minister for Education and Culture, Anies Baswedan, and former Speaker of Indonesia People’s Consultative Assembly, Hidayat Nur Wahid.

AIMEP highlights and achievements

Reflecting on his experience as part of the MEP in 2015, Yanuardi believes that a strength of the MEP is its ability to assist delegates in building diverse networks. Networks, says Yanuardi, are of themselves an incredibly valuable resource.

“Through the AIMEP, I had a very valuable experience… as well as gaining a vast network of new friends,” he said.

“This really helped me to broaden my perspective, friendship circles, and also professional networks – both through fellow MEP alumni and other relationships.”

After his participation in the program, Yanuardi set out to strengthen the MEP alumni network in Indonesia, collaborating with MEP Director, Rowan Gould, to create the Australia-Indonesia MEP Alumni Forum Facebook group as well as a highly active WhatsApp MEP Alumni group.

Through these social media networks Yanuardi was able to initiate, edit and publish the MEP’s first alumni publication Hidup Damai di Negeri Multikultur (Living Peacefully in a Multicultural Country) – a book which brings together the reflections of 77 Indonesian and Australian alumni on their MEP experiences in Australia and Indonesia.

As a result of his active involvement in the alumni community, Yanuardi was selected to become Head of the newly formed Indonesian MEP Alumni Forum in 2017.
